To get a gradient you have to go to the gradient tool.. and that is with the paint bucket tool....(if you can't see the gradient too..you go to the paint bucket and click on the little arrow thats on it.. and it will show the option of the gradient tool)
and the window in the picture will show up and you follow the rest of the instructions here..
