On the 27th of March, 2005, the Arab World lost a great and esteemed star; Ahmed Zaki, after a long struggle with cancer. Born on the 18th of November, 1949 in Al-Zagazig, Ahmed Zaki Abdul Rahman was brought up by his grandfather after his father died and mother remarried. His life was quite and normal up till preparatory school; upon graduating, Ahmed Zaki decided to enroll in a technical school but life had much more in store for him than anyone could imagine. Because he was a big fan of theater himself, the school principal encouraged the young Zaki to take the stage in numerous plays organized by the school when he felt his growing interest in the theater and acting in general.
Ahmed's life took an unexpected turn when famous actors came to the school one day to watch one of the plays; his acting was so good that they urged him to enroll in the theater academy and take his hobby a step further. Soon after the incident, Zaki joined the academy and was lucky enough to get his very first role in the play Hello Shalabey while studying there. His first leading role on the silver screen was opposite Soad Hosny in Shafika wa Metwali in 1978. After that the star-to be played roles in a number of films like Al-Rakessa wal Tabbal and Al-Nemr Al-Aswad in 1984, Saad Al-Yatem (1985), Al-Bedaya and Al-Hob Fouk Hadebet Al-Ahram (1986) and Shader Al-Samak (1986). Zaki always made sure his roles were different and unusual like his role as a doorman in Al-Beih Al-Bawab in 1987, a strict officer in Zawget Ragol Mohem in 1988 and a man who gets stuck with a couple of animals in Arba'a fe Mohema Rasmeya in 1987.
Those were not Zaki's only roles though, he also played the leading role in films like Ahlam Hend we Camillia, Al-Beida wa Al-Hagar, Al-Emperator, Emra'a Waheda La Takfi, Kabourya, Al-Ra'ey wal Nesaa, Ded El-Hokouma, Sawa'a Al-Hanem and Ana La Agzeb Wa Lakini Atagamal.
As for the stage this great actor went on to play roles in some of the most popular plays during his long career that covered more than 20 fruitful years. He was a star in the famous comedy plays Madraset Al-Moushagebeen and El-Eyal Kebret. Zaki will always be remembered for his roles as Taha Hussein in Al-Ayam and his historical roles in Nasser 56 and Ayam Al-Sadat.
His personal life is much simpler than his acting career; Ahmed Zaki got married only once in his life and it was to the late actress Hala Fouad who died of cancer. He has one son; Haitham, from Fouad.
