Hey everyone - i'll be posting some history of the famous sports I'll add more later
Baseball ~>Americans started playing baseball using their own rules in the 1800s. By the 1860s, the sport became popular. Alexander Joy Cartwright (1820-1892) of New York invented the modern baseball field in 1845. Baseball was based on the English game of rounders. Rounders become popular in the United States in the early 19th century, where the game was called "townball", "base", or "baseball". Cartwright formalized the modern rules of baseball.
Basketball ~>James Naismith was the Canadian physical education instructor who invented basketball in 1891.At Springfield College (which was then the Y.M.C.A. training school), James Naismith, under the direction of American phys-ed specialist Luther Halsey Gulick, invented the indoor sport of basketball.
Bowling ~> was invented by the ancient Egyptians.
Cricket ~>First played by the English over 300 years ago, cricket quickly expanded into every continent on the globe
Football (American)~> Derived from the English game of rugby, American football was started in 1879 with rules instituted by Walter Camp, player and coach at Yale University. (Interesting 9a7?)
Golf ~>The earliest golf balls were thin leather bags stuffed with feathers, they did not fly very far. The gutta-percha ball was invented in 1848 and could be hit a maximum distance of 225 yards. In 1899, the first rubber balls were used and when professionally hit reached distances approaching 430 yards. Golf sticks have evolved from wooden shaft clubs to today's sets of woods and irons with durability, weight distribution and graduation utility. In the 1880s golf bags first came into use. "The beast of burden," or caddie, has all but disappeared, replaced by caddie and golf carts. The first powered golf car appeared around 1962, invented by Merlin L. Halvorson. Ice Hockey ~>Most historians place the roots of hockey in the chilly climes of northern Europe, specifically Great Britain and France, where field hockey was a popular summer sport more than 500 years ago. The game we know today, however, was first played in Montreal in 1875, according to rules devised by Canadian J G A Creighton, a McGill student.
Ice Skating ~>The oldest pair of skates known date back to about 3000 B.C., found at the bottom of a lake in Switzerland. The skates were made from the leg bones of large animals, holes were bored at each end of the bone and leather straps were used to tie the skates on. The Dutch word for "skate" is "schenkel" which means "leg bone". Around the 14th Century, the Dutch started using wooden platform skates with flat iron bottom runners. The skates were attached to the skater's shoes with leather straps. Poles were used to propel the skater. Wayed 3eyabni il history maleh!!!
Paintball ~>Paintball is a sport where opponents use guns or "markers" loaded with a harmless paint and play a variety of war and hunting games. The "paint" balls are many small containers filled with paint, usually gel caps. The guns or markers are powered by compressed gas. Paintball markers evolved from the gas-powered guns used during the 1970s for other purposes, such as those used by forestry groups to mark trees and trails or by farmers to mark cattle.
Skiing ~>Although the sport of skiing in America is little more than a century old, but researchers have dated a rock carving of a skier, found on the Norwegian island of Rodoy as being over 4,000 years old. Skiing was so revered in Scandinavia that the Vikings worshipped Ull and Skade, the god and goddess of skiing. In the US, skiing was introduced by Norwegian gold miners.
Soccer ~>Not much is known about the origin of soccer, however football and ball kicking games were played by the Greeks and Romans.
Softball ~>In 1887, George Hanthingy, a reporter for Chicago Board of Trade, invented softball. He invented the game as a form of indoor baseball on a cold winter day inside the warm Farragut Boat Club. ma3arf shoo salfat hal game...but i remember playing it in school min zman
Swimming ~> Babylonian bas-reliefs and Assyrian wall drawings point to very early swimming skills among humans. The most ancient and famous of drawings depicting men swimming are to be found in the Kebir desert.
Tennis ~>Games of racket and ball (including real tennis in Great Britain, royal tennis in Australia, and court tennis in the United States, all of which are the same game and played indoors) originated from a 12th- and 13th-century French handball game called jeu de paume ("game of the palm"). In 1873 Major Walter Wingfield invented a game called Sphairistikè, from which modern outdoor tennis evolved. - Encyclopedia Britannica
Volleyball ~>William Morgan invented volleyball in 1895 at the Holyoke, MA., YMCA - a trophy is now named in his honor. William Morgan's basis for Volleyball was the then popular German game called "Faustball", this site also includes the history of Volleyball in Canada.
Windsurfing ~>Windsurfing or boardsailing is a sport that combines sailing and surfing and uses a one person craft called a sailboard. The very first sailboards date back to the late 1950s.
