Mainz 0 Bayern 4
Victory cruise over stragglers takes Bayern to third
16.12.2006 First-half goals from Hasan Salihamidzic and Roy Makaay put Bayern on the road to a comfortable 4-0 victory over the Bundesliga’s bottom club in Mainz that will keep up the pressure on league leaders Schalke and boost confidence that the misfiring Munich attack is finally finding its scoring touch.
A full house of 20,000 say Bayern gain control after a few early scares, a dominance that was rewarded when midfielder Salihamidzic headed home Bastian Schweinsteiger’s cross just after the half-hour, and Makaay shot home to double the advantage in first-half stoppage time.
Two goals in three minutes halfway through the second half put the result beyond doubt, as Claudio Pizarro shot home after a well-worked team move and Schweinsteiger drove home as long-range effort via the far post.
Van Bommel’s explosive return
Bayern’s double strike killed off the match as a spectacle, and 20 minutes from the end coach Felix Magath was able to bring off Schweinsteiger, who had been involved in three of the four goals, and Makaay, a constant thorn in the side of the Mainz defence, for a well-earned rest.
Bayern started the match reinforced by the return of Mark van Bommel from suspension, and the midfielder soon made his presence felt, driving a shot narrowly over the bar from 25 metres in the fifth minute, then sending another long-distance strike into the side-netting five minutes later.
In between the home side gave the visitors a fright when Imre Szabics, who had earlier fallen theatrically in the Reds’ penalty area, evaded the Bayern offside trap to bear down on Oliver Kahn, but Daniel van Buyten managed to intercept as the Mainz forward tried to square the ball to give his striking partner, Ranisav Jovanovic, an easy tap-in.
Bayern impose the tempo
In the 17th minute another opportunity fell to Jovanovic when van Buyten and Lucio failed to cut out a pass, but the home fans were disappointed again as the striker failed to get the ball under control.
However, it was the visitors who were starting to control the tempo of the game, and to create goalscoring opportunities. Makaay and Lahm sent efforts over the bar, and the Dutchman drove his free kick into the wall from a dangerous position.
Mainz were now struggling to get the ball out of their own half, and when Lucio had a 22-metre shot turned wide by goalkeeper Christian Wetklo in the 31st minute, it proved the prelude to Bayern taking the lead. Schweinsteiger lifted his corner into the five-metre box, where Salihamidzic rose to put the ball into the back of the net.
Makaay doubles the lead
Makaay was looking particularly sharp, sending a volley just over the bar in the 39th minute and another shot narrowly too high four minutes later, and it was no surprise when he doubled Bayern’s advantage in the second minute of stoppage time. Following Andreas Ottl’s cross, the Dutch hitman controlled the ball on the edge of the five-metre box, turned his marker Manuel Friedrich and shot home into the far corner.
Mainz replaced Christof Babatz with Chadli Amri at the break but the home side continued to struggle to make an impact on the Bayern defence, and a second substitution, with Fabian Gerber coming on for Markus Feulner in the 64th minute, was immediately followed by two further goals from the visitors that effectively ended the contest.
First, Willy Sagnol’s cross to the far post was retrieved by Salihamidzic, whose pass was helped on by Schweinsteiger to Pizarro. The Peruvian took his chance impressively, striking a fierce shot past Wetklo from 11 metres.
Trademark Schweinsteiger drive
The home side seemed to be still shell-shocked two minutes later when Schweinsteiger cut in toward the penalty area from the right and hammered one of his trademark long-range drives in off the far post.
The departures of Schweinsteiger, Makaay and Sagnol brought Roque Santa Cruz, Lukas Podolski and Christian Lell into the game, and the Paraguayan nearly gave Bayern a fifth goal, dribbling past four defenders before bludgeoning a shot against the post.
The final result took Bayern into the winter break third in the Bundesliga, leapfrogging Stuttgart who could only manage a goalless draw at Cottbus. The Reds are three points behind leaders Schalke, who beat Alemania Aachen 1-0, while Bremen can join the Gelsenkirchen side on 36 points if they defeat Wolfsburg on Sunday.
