Ten-man Bayern battle to precious win
18.10.2006 Bastian Schweinsteiger scored the winner but was sent off just after half-time as Bayern clung on for a gritty win on an eventful evening in Lisbon.
A boisterous 37,379 crowd at the José Alvalade stadium saw the first 45 minutes neatly divide into two halves, the first dominated by Bayern but the second clearly the preserve of the home team.
The visitors roared off the blocks and should have had a penalty after a manifest foul on Claudio Pizarro, but Schweinsteiger made sure justice was done with a screamer to open the scoring on 19 minutes.
On course for next round
The Portuguese seized control midway through the half and the German champions struggled to maintain the lead until half-time, but the game had become increasingly bad-tempered and weak referee Terje Haugue of Norway brandished a second yellow card at Schweinsteiger just seconds after the restart.
With their backs to the wall now, the Bavarians initially required a blend of good fortune and desperation to repel Sporting's urgent attacking efforts, but a serene Oliver Kahn, the incresingly solid Lucio and Daniel van Buyten, and a fine marauding display up front from Pizarro were enough to seal an ultimately deserved second away win in succession in this term's Champions league.
Bayern thus extend their lead at the top of Group B after becoming the first German club to take maximum points from their opening three fixtures in Europe's elite competition, and realistically need just a point from the home meeting with Sporting in a fortnight to seal a berth in the firt knockout round.
Boss opts for Roque's aerial power
Felix Magath made just one change to the side which beat Hertha Berlin 4-2 at the weekend, preferring the threat posed by Roque Santa Cruz in the air against the diminutive Portuguese to Roy Makaay's skills on the ground.
Schweinsteiger had put two past Portugal and Sporting keeper Ricardo in the World Cup third-place play-off and rattled the keeper's nerves early on with a characteristic drive as the Reds opened confidently.
Bayern were denied a clear-cut penalty when the inconsistent match official ignored Marco Caneira's blatant tug at Pizarro's shirt after Mark van Bommel's effort slithered from Ricardo's grasp, and both Schweinsteiger and Santa Cruz put headers wide from Willy Sagnol crosses as the Reds turned the screw.
Ricardo must have felt a nightmare had come back to haunt him when Schweinsteiger blasted into the far corner in the 19th minute from fully 30 yards, but in truth it was an almost unstoppable swerving drive and hardly to be classed a goalkeeping error.

Pizarro headed into the side netting as the unnerved home keeper totally misjudged a Sagnol free-kick, but the missed chance was the signal for Sporting to emerge from their shell and heap pressure on the away goal.
Carlos Martins fired across goal, Kahn saved superbly from Liedson and Alecsandro, and both Lucio and Philipp Lahm came perilously close to own goals as the visitors reeled for a spell.
An element of niggle had crept in by now, the Portuguese always willing to hurl themselves to the damp turf at the slightest suggestion of contact, but there could be few complaints from Schweinsteiger when he added a second booking to an earlier caution from the first half and was dismissed just a minute after the restart.

With his side a man down, Magath took off Podolski and Santa Cruz in favour of the midfield strength offered by Hasan Salihamidzic and Julio dos Santos but the Reds suffered a torrid spell and breathed a sigh of relief when Polga Anderson's shot rebounded from the post after 58 minutes, although Liedson could easily have received his marching orders for retaliation ten minutes earlier.
Lisbon sub Yannick caused no end of trouble for a time but Kahn twice denied the lively youngster, and after Tello hoisted a decent chance high and wide, the ten man visitors dug in and defended with immense bravery for the final quarter of an hour to seal a tight but ultimately deserved third European victory on the trot.
