Unfortuntely most of the stories and news in Lebanon are only related to POLITICS . SO , I thought why don't I open a thread where we can talk about whatever problems, conflicts, and issues in Lebanon:Poltical , Social .....whatever it is ....
ok , I'll start with a subject :
As we all know, in Lebanon there was a HUGE debate about Civil Marriage and the Religious people were all against it ! Although many lebanese people are going to Cyprus to get married in Civil Courts , still the Lebanese Authorites REFUSE to make Civil Marriage Legal ! so , what do u think of legalizing Civil Marriage in Lebanon ?!
I just thought we get a break of POLITICS , since it seems " taweele l oussa ma3 Lebnan "

well , as for me I am FOR Civil Marrige
I have great respect to religion and its rituals but since when does religion or society control who we fall in love with ?!! Everyone is entitled to fall in love and marry the person he sees a future with , no text of law should ban that ...

Nice idea Janjoon.
I also believe in civil marriage and I think it's silly that Lebanon hasn't made the step required to make it legal. There are two things that the government might fear:
1) Backlash from within the country
2) Backlash from the rest of the Arab world / Arab League
To address the primary concern, I really don't think that we're going to see rioting in the streets if civil marriage is to become legal. I think its one of those things that is hotly debated as the idea is circulating around, but I don't think that there will be uproar once it becomes legal. I think that the government is afraid of setting a precedent for more liberalization in society.
In terms of the region, what does Lebanon have to lose ? Not much, right ? From what I know, Egypt has civil marraige but Syria and Jordan don't. Would we face regional condemnation... ? Is it a legacy of having been under Syrian rule ?
Interesting topic.

Well thats certaintly a thign the lebanese authorities would fear , the reaction in the Arab World ! ....when are we going to think for ourselves benefit !?!
Another reason, why it's still debatable , it has to something to do with taking power from the religous figures (Partiche , Mufti....) and giving this power to the authorities i.e. giving power to the people themselves ..that which is well FORBIDDEN in Lebanon ....

As mentioned, civil marriage is not something new to the region, just as having peace accords with Israel is not new in the Arab world, which brings up the rhetorical: halal 3aleyon w haram 3alena?
The power struggle between religious authority and politics/people will always be an issue, especially in the Middle East, we can't allow that to subdue something so basic as marrying someone you love. Not allowing civil marriage is the only way religious authority can control the lifestyles of the people, which they are failing at since people are getting married to whoever they want be it in Cyprus or a fake religious conversion by one of the partners.
Bottom line: since we live by our own individual values that do not necessarily match that of the religious authorities, civil marriages should be allowed.
