One dead in Beirut demo

A member of the opposition Shiite Amal movement was killed by gunfire during a demonstration in Beirut on Sunday over power cuts, a party official told AFP.

"Ali Hassan Hamza has passed away after being shot in the back," the official said on condition of anonymity, adding that he was unable to identify the source of the fire.

Earlier a security official and witnesses told AFP that gunmen opened fire on Lebanese troops in the southern suburbs of Beirut where demonstrators had blocked roads with blazing tyres to protest chronic power cuts in that area.
