Reds rediscover their scoring touch
14.10.2006 There may have been a few jitters in the last half-hour when Hertha Berlin looked as though they might overhaul a three-goal deficit, but ultimately Bayern clinched a 4-2 victory at the Allianz Arena which hauled the home side back up to second in the Bundesliga.
Just as importantly, Bayern seem to have banished the goalscoring problems that have afflicted the champions, with just seven goals in their first six matches, and all three strikers, Roy Makaay, Claudio Pizarro and Lukas Podolski, boosted their confidence by getting on the scoresheet.
Coach Felix Magath made his intentions clear from the outset by starting with three forwards, and Bayern’s powerful attacking force kept the Berliners on the back foot throughout the first half, with two goals in six minutes early on setting the tone for a match in which strikers always had the upper hand over defences.
Targeting the top of the table
Hertha came to the Allianz Arena looking for only their third away victory over Bayern in 24 attempts, with their last success nearly 30 years ago, and with the memory of their most recent visit, a 3-0 drubbing at the beginning of last season, still fresh in the memory.
The visitors from Berlin came to Munich at the head of the league table, but the home side knew a victory could take them back to the top of the Bundesliga and they started with a sense of urgency. After just seven minutes Claudio Pizarro served up a chance to Roy Makaay, but the Dutch hitman elected to pass rather than shoot and the opportunity was lost.
Hertha’s reprieve was brief, however. Two minutes later Lukas Podolski, fresh from his goalscoring heroics for Germany against Slovakia in midweek, but Makaay through again, and this time he left Christian Fiedler helpless with a cool finish from 12 metres.
Visitors stunned by Bayern’s onslaught
Just six minutes later the home side doubled their advantage. Bastian Schweinsteiger seized upon a defensive error from Patrick Ebert to feed Pizarro on the left wing. Willy Sagnol had made his way into the opposition box and met the Peruvian’s cross to turn the ball over the line.
The Berliners seemed stunned by Bayern’s onslaught, and further chances fell to Mark van Bommel and Philippe Lahm before the visitors’ first shot on goal, a free-kick from Ebert, was comfortably gathered by Oliver Kahn in the 21st minute.
But the home side continued to keep a tight grip on the game, and Schweinsteiger twice came close to adding to his recent goals for his country, sending a shot over the Hertha bar after 28 minutes and volleying narrowly wide 10 minutes later. Podolski could have put the game beyond the visitors’ reach in the final minute of the first half, but his close-range effort from Makaay’s pass struck the post.
Hertha hit back
The teams came out for the second half with Bayern substitute Martin Demichelis on for Van Bommel, who was suffering from pain in a calf muscle, and Nigerian Solomon Okoronkwo replacing the Argentine Christian Giménez in Hertha’s attack. But it was the home side that continued to press, with Pizarro having a shot blocked five minutes after the restart.
Ebert, who was having a difficult game and would soon be substituted, was booked in the 53rd minute for a foul on Sagnol, and moments later Bayern extended their lead. Demichelis was the provider, and Makaay cleverly let his pass run through to Pizarro, who guided the ball past Fiedler.
But just when the result looked a foregone conclusion, Hertha suddenly roused themselves. Ellery Cairo, who had just replaced Ebert, floated in a corner, and Malik Fathi rose unchallenged to head home.
Suddenly the 69,000 capacity crowd was nervous. In quick succession Lucio had to step in to halt a solo run from Marko Pantelic and to cut out a dangerous ball from Okoronkwo. And after 73 minutes the visitors pulled another goal back when Kevin Boateng set up Pantelic, whose shot left Kahn no chance.
Podolski makes it safe
Suddenly Bayern could see what had looked an easy victory slipping away. Demichelis went into the book for a foul on Pal Dardai, and Boateng saw a shot deflected past the post.
But after 78 minutes the home team restored their two goal advantage. Makaay led a counter-attack and slipped the ball to Sagnol, whose perfectly judged cross was clinically converted by Podolski.
Hertha could have snatched a third just a minute later when Pantelic received the ball in a good position, but he could not get his shot on target. The final 4-2 victory left Bayern in second place in the table, behind new leaders Werder Bremen on goal difference, while Hertha’s defeat dropped the Berliners to seventh.
