I know, very old thread, but I'm bored and just saw this thread.
Here are easy steps to get the dark eye smokey effect. However keep in mind, it all depends on the brushes used and the shadow color. They can make or break the makeup!
1- draw a fine line on the upper lash with a black pencil eyeliner (kohl)
2- with a brush (works better if it's a slanted brush), apply black shadow above the eyeliner line you just drew. This should smudge them together
3- with a thicker blending brush, apply the black shadow all over the lid, moving upwards from the inside corner (if the outer sides get smudgy, use a q-tip to blot it). Spread the shadow completely over the upper lid
4- with the slanted brush, apply a thin line of the dark shadow beneath the lower eyelid.
5- line the inside of the eye with pencil eyeliner (if you want an even stronger effect, line the eyes again with liquid eyeliner, top and bottom)
watch it, it can be quite messy! -- oh and DONT forget the mascara
