Such cultured open people wallah!  Thanks, it's funny people love and hate us for the same reason. ;D Yes, Oran is located at the northwest region part of Algeria. It is called 'Wahran' in Arabic which stands for 'two lions', and you're right it has more than one spelling. There are many great figures of Wahran music, but I have a special preference for older ones including Ahmad Tidjani, I know I'm an old school. He is half Algerian on father's side, half French -though originally Italian- on his mother's side. His songs contain deep criticism and are more politically profound than people think. He was getting older here. He witnessed the massive wave of artists and people he liked to call 'shtara' emigrating Algeria, he too had no choice but to leave his country and he went off to fight in WWII. That's basically what the song 'Wahran' is about.  There are many other songs about/deal with Wahran, these are one my favs: 7abibi fi Wahran wana b3eed, by Cheb Hasni -- www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-SbeNq-Q3s .. This one reminds me of an old popular Baghdadi song by Faisal el 3alian. Almost exact same lyrics! Wahran, by Cheb Khalid -- www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWNkg6caUU4&feature=related ... Okay, the song starts out with 'Wahran ro7ti khsara.. hijjru minnik nass shtara' which I explained earlier. It goes on describing the homesickness and confusion Algerians went through being out of place. Then it goes on saying 'ya far7i 3ala ewlad il Hamri.. ewlad il mdena w sid il Houari', talking about some neighbors in Wahran including 'sid il Hourai' which I, for some reason, confused with the great Soufi loved by Algerians. I think it's another neighbor in Wahran. '3idiet m3akhum su3'ri.. ileehum fani 6ol 3omri' which I think is very understandable in Middle Eastern accents. Then it describes 'sahryat bladi' by describing the ga9ba/flute and glali/drums that reminded him of Algeria. 'Ya li mashien leha 3'adi.. wa9u yithalu fi bladi' which I think means to take good care of the country. I prefer not to go further because I'm not certainly sure if I understand what it meant but it talks about some problems the Algerian society had suffered from, like Alcoholism when it goes 'tarko deenhum wtb3u il kas' and gambling- 'yal zeena bil kas wil mayda'. The last part goes like 'rij3at il 3'oma fi fu2adi.. wlet nbki w naadi', it expresses sadness over all the losses and devastation the country had went through, from a personal point of view. The only part left goes something like 'wa3di 3al il 6a76a7a we3di.. kan zeenha zeen il wedadi', I wish somebody would help me understand what '6a76a7a' means. |

Sorry, you should've seen how long it took me to explain the other song. lol I've done a scary big study about it and I understood it way more than the other one. To be honest with you, I really don't want to ruin the other song because I feel there is a deep message behind but I'd go with the plain explanation which I don't want to do. It starts normally with 'Eh roo7i ya Wahran besslama beslemma beslemma', and there comes the list of words I don't understand. I hope 'nekwih' means something beyond what it sounds like it does, unless it's motivated by some mixture feelings of envy and insecurity towards the place. Then he starts talking about having 'ajdad' in his prayers. Problems are mentioned again with all the 'houzia', police, and darkness/symbol of fear. I have no clue what is Chicago supposed to mean but I think he's talking about the same thing in 'Hamri' and other neighbors around the place. In the last part, the city is personified as a fine young woman he falls in love with-'sh7aal nhebbik enti ya bniaa.' and he ended up talking about her. A lot of things are repeated throughout the song, if you listen to it over and over, it would probably make more sense. Knowing Iraqi, I do understand many words other Arabic speakers are not familiar with, but I still don't understand some words and I am focusing on the deeper content and the meaning of the song that the words carry. I know the song in general means something beyond my understanding. Don't misjudge it Flusffia please. I love the song mainly for the expression, tunes, and his outstanding voice. Not to mention this song long with some other collection of songs bring back amazing memories and define a particular era in my life. I once posted in a North African forum and asked what some words of the song are supposed to mean and what do they symbolize, and I didn't get any help. Any North Africans here to to help me? |

looool why would i misjudge it the reason i fell for the song in the 1st place is the melody and the tune i absolutely LOVEEEEEE it <3 and his voice is AMAAAAZING here i love him well there are loads of north africans here ( algerian kaman, Yidir who just posted in the previous page) i hope they see ur question and answer it ;d i would love to know more too!! and MASHALLA 3ALAIKEEEEEE how much research and study u put on all of this ... ur knowledge is incredible seriously <3 mashalla... |
