I understand what you mean exactly. I don't know much about Gebran but obviously he was someone respected and appreciated... but that is not the point. When someone of his caliber is murdered, it's the values he represents that are targeted. Also, the fact that he was so known puts a human face on the tragedy. His murder is obviously an attempt to confuse and instill fear in people. This reminds me of how in the nineties terrorists in Algeria used to kill anyone who didn't agree with them and even their own allies. A great Algerian journalist and author named Tahar Djaout said: ''Si tu te tais, tu meurs. Si tu parles,tu meurs. Alors, parle et meurs!" If you keep quiet, you die. If you speak, you die. So speak and die." Sadly, he was murdered shortly after he said that. May God bless the souls of Gebran Tweiny, Tahar Djaout and all victims of injustice. Excuse the long post but i felt like saying this. There is definitely a pattern in all these assassinations. All of the victims were outspoken and wanted something different for Lebanon. The spectacular and super violent methods of these killings (car bombs) are also very telling. Basically, scare people into silence. One thing is for sure, they will not succeed... intika thanx alot for your words ... and i totally agree with what u said. and also sorry for the death of Tahar Djaout

UNITED NATIONS - Syria's ambassador to the United Nations, Fayssal Mekdad, likened slain Lebanese legislator Gibran Tueni to a dog yesterday ............. "So now every time that a dog dies in Beirut there will be an international investigation?" Mr. Mekdad said to an Arab diplomat during a closed-door council session, according to a diplomat who heard the conversation but asked to remain anonymous......... ............

Guys, ( sorry to intrude once again) i'm always skeptical of anonymous informers. It's very possible that these reports of what the Syrian ambassador supposedly said about Gebran's killing might not be true...

Katkoot, thanks for the link. Yes, if he did say it then it's really awful and discusting!but honestly i do have my doubts about the source. The ''New York sun's'' is not credible at all, especially when it comes to Arab affairs. The owner is a very anti-Arab Israeli, his name is Conrad Black. He owns the Jerusalem post in Israel and many news papers around the world. He used to publish terrible lies about Arabs and Palestinians in his papers. Here is a link where you can read about the paper: www.salon.com/news/feature/2002/04/25/nysun/Also the anonymous thing raises questions. It's a popular tactic with right wing media and politicians because it hard to verify if it's true. And quite often the info turns out to be false...Inshallah we will know the truth...
